TLS Wetzlar Visit October 2018 Update.

The 2018 LHSA annual meeting will take place in Wetzlar, Germany, the home of Leica AG. Preparations are already under way, and Leica AG and LHSA are collaborating to make this meeting an exciting and meaningful experience for Leica enthusiasts.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 4 through Sunday, October 7, 2018. Arrival date for most will be Wednesday October 3. This will truly be an international meeting. We already have members from the United States, Canada, Germany, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Denmark, Korea and Japan who have expressed interest in attending, and we will be joined at various times by members of Germany’s Leica Historica and the UK’s Leica Society.

Attendance will be limited in order to make sure that we can manage the group, so it is important to sign up and send your deposit before the deadline. We also need you to respond to the four questions below.

TO SECURE YOUR PLACE YOU MUST SUBMIT A DEPOSIT OF $200 PER PERSON BY JANUARY 30, 2018. We are limiting attendance to about 150 and space will be available first come, first served. Because you have already indicated interest, you are receiving this email two weeks prior to a general e-mail to members and if you submit your deposit you will have a place. After about 150 places are filled, space will be available only if there are cancellations; we will maintain a wait list. All deposits will be applied to the registration fee for the meeting, which will cover basic meeting expenses, the reception and such items as the shuttle bus in Wetzlar. THE REGISTRATION FEE COULD BE HIGHER THAN $200, and some events, such as the banquet on Saturday and the river cruise, will be an extra cost. Deposits are refundable until August 1, 2018, after which no refunds will be issued.

After you submit your deposit, please take a few minutes to answer these questions, so we can plan properly:

1. Are you interested in bus transportation from Frankfurt on Wednesday October 3, 2018 (this may be at a set time so that several flights can be met)?

2. Are you interested in having your sensor cleaned while we are there? Leica has requested we give them a count, as demand may exceed their capacity

3. Are you interested in a River cruise on Sunday October 7, 2018? This would an extra cost item that would include transportation to and from the embarkation and debarkation points, and possibly a dinner.

4. If you have been to Wetzlar and would like to help out with walking tours of Wetzlar, we can use your help. Please let us know.

***Tentative Program Attached: Our current planning includes factory tours of the Leica facility in Leitz Park, local walking tours, a trip to nearby photo sites (perhaps an added trip to scenic Braunfels), a banquet, a presentation by a local photographer about local photo opportunities, and a techniques presentation by Thorsten Overgaard. Some Leica equipment will be available for daily loan, and we are working with Leica to see if they can clean sensors while we are there.

In addition, important Leica executives have been invited, including Mattias Harsch (the new Leica CEO), Stefan Daniel (head of Leica’s camera business), Markus Limberger (COO), renowned lens designer Peter Karbe, and others. Our good friend Lars Netopil, who runs the Leica Store in Wetzlar has invited us for a visit. We are also looking into a river cruise on Sunday, October 7. Some of the activities will depend on interest, of course, as well as on how many attendees there are. A PowerPoint that roughly outlines the schedule is attached.

Most, if not all, of the meetings in Wetzlar will be at Leica AG, who have been very gracious about setting aside space and helping with the planning. There is a new Arcona hotel right at Leitz Park that has offered LHSA special rates starting at €99 for a one person single room up to €189 for a 2 person suite. These are going to be prepaid rates, so you will need to make payment in advance but rooms will be cancellable at no charge until 6 weeks before arrival. We are also working on a block of rooms at the Michel, which is in town, but those efforts remain in progress. (The Wetzlarer Hof had no availability). We will be running a no cost shuttle for registrants between town and Leitz Park. It is a 10 minute ride and this will allow people at Leitz to get in to town and people in town to get to the meetings.

You may want to take advantage of the great travel opportunities both before and after our meeting, as Wetzlar is only about 40 minutes away from Frankfurt and connections to elsewhere in Europe; and, of course, there are also opportunities for road trips on the great Autobahn system.

Like all LHSA meetings, there will be plenty of opportunity for Leica enthusiasts to interact with each other, but this one promises to be special. This meeting will be open to members of LHSA and their family members only (other than members of the other societies who are joining).
